2.     Listing Officers in Ward 12 (Roxbury)                   (5/26- 5/20)

Dear Community Members:

Please be advised that the Boston Election Department's team of annual listing (City Census) officers will be visiting each neighborhood throughout the next few months to update the annual listing of residents.  Every City and Town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is mandated by law to conduct an annual listing.  Information obtained during the listing process is forwarded to the Office of the Jury Commissioner for use in compiling jury pools, and is also used as an indicator of the population changes in the City.  The information gathered also helps to ensure the accuracy and the integrity of the voting list.

The Listing Officers will go door-to-door in neighborhoods, and are easily identified by their City-issued photo-IDs and bright orange vests.  They will confirm basic information for each address: name, occupation, and birth date of each occupant age 17 and older.  If there are new residents at the address, the Listing Officer will obtain the appropriate information, and will also drop off voter registration forms for those who may want to register to vote.

The Listing Officers will be in Ward 12 (Roxbury) this week (May 16-20).  Additional e-mail notifications will be sent throughout the next few weeks/months as we enter another ward/neighborhood.  Please share this information with your community members, family, friends, co-workers, etc.  Thank you for your time, and please do not hesitate to contact the Boston Election Department at 617-635-3767 should you have any further questions or concerns.

If you have not responded to the Annual Listing yet, please visit this website to update your information: http://www.cityofboston.gov/elections/annual_listing.asp.

Sincerely,

Helen

3.   Boston Public Schools Family Friendly Enrollment Process (Small Group Discussion Meetings)    (5/18, 5/21, 5/25)

Do you all know about these meetings posted on BPS website: http://www.bostonpublicschools.org/redesign

This May, BPS is embarking on an 18-month planning process to create a more family friendly enrollment process. Phase one of the project will be to improve how we register our families. During the month of May, the Office of Enrollment and Welcome Services will be organizing several small discussion groups to hear from parents who have recently registered with us.

We want to hear about your challenges AND your recommendations on how to build a better process. The following conversations will focus on registration issues such as the outreach process, document requirements, the use of technology, and other potential barriers. In addition, many more opportunities will be made available over the next few months to talk about the assignment process; all interested parties may participate in either or both of these efforts.

All are welcome to join the discussion, but you must RSVP in advance to participate. To keep discussion groups small and productive, we ask that participants select just one session to attend. To participate in one of the following registration conversations, please click here.

Come to the Mozart Park "Reach" Sculpture Unveiling

Honoring Immigrants in our Community

Reach Sculpture

Date: Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Time: 4:30pm-5:30pm

Location: Mozart Park, Corner of Mozart and Centre Street

The design of the sculpture "Reach" was created by Cambridge artist Douglas Kornfeld and inspired by HSTF youth and Hyde/Jackson Square community members.

Kornfeld explains the significance of the sculpture: "From the central axis of the park the abstracted steel uprights form an up-reaching hand symbolizing the immigrant experience...The work is located in the Hyde Square neighborhood which has traditionally been a gateway immigrant neighborhood."

The sculpture has nine unique engraved quotations on the steel uprights written by local youth about their experiences as recent immigrants, or as children of recent immigrants.

The New England Foundation for the Arts funded the artwork. We would also like to the City of Boston for its support.

8.   JOBS

FAA JOBS       Pass it on....

FAA JOBS!!!!

If you have or know kids between the ages of 18-31 with a high school diploma, the Federal Aviation Association is taking applications for air traffic controller school. We all have kids and know kids in the right age group (under 31) and with some effort they could reach a salary of over $100,000 with benefits in about 3 years! You need only a high school diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the exam.

<
http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers
http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers%3E ;

Fill out the application immediately - even if they don't know if they'd want to attend immediately - it's the federal government and it may take them months to call. The key is to apply NOW... There will be a lot of retirements coming up rather quickly and they need to line up training to accommodate these openings. It's my understanding that the FAA rarely has an open application such as this and that the jobs are coveted.

This is a great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a site like Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance into the training program - after which you can transfer anywhere in the country that has a tower. I hope you pass this information on to family & friends.
