=================================================================================
Happy New Year!!!

Roxbury Residents, Stakeholders, and Friends of Roxbury:

The new year begins with a promise to get a lot accomplished.  The Whittier Street Health Center project is underway, the Ruggles Place and Bartlett Yard teams are getting ready to submit their Article 80 Project Notification Form, and the RFP for 9 & 10 is ready to be issued in February.  The Roxbury Strategic Master Plan Oversight Committee members will need the support of residents, stakeholders, and friends of Roxbury to help them implement the goals of the Roxbury Strategic Master Plan. They will need your encouragement, your attendance, and your input in order to succeed with the work that lies ahead.

The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 10, at 6:00 PM, at the Dudley Branch Library.

For your convenience, I have attached a copy of the meeting calendar for the year 2011. The calendar is also available on the BRA Website.

Wishing you all the best for 2011,

7.   Eviction Blockade list - AUCTION  (1/12--3PM)  (sorry LEF sending this msg late)
=====================================================================

Dear friends

     One reason that we don't put out an alert to our blockade list for auction protests is because they are cancelled at the last minute with regularity.  Since the auction was on as of this morning, and given that we had previously protested for the Pierre's, we decided to put out an action alert today for the protest.  But...

     HOWEVER, THE AUCTION WAS JUST POSTPONED TO JAN. 12, at 3 pm.  No protest planned.
     Very sorry for an inconvenience this may have caused.  Enjoy the holiday!

     One other note.  Our movement is spreading!  There was an auction protest in  Springfield last Thursday that stopped the auction.  There is an auction protest tomorrow in Lynn and on Tuesday in Chelsea.  We have auction protests scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 4 and Wednesday Jan. 5.

     Finally, we continue to follow the case of the St. Simons, at 29 Charles st. in Hyde Park.  If there are not successful negotiations between Aurora and a friendly buyer, we could be doing an eviction blockade for the St. Simon's next week.
     Thank you for your solidarity and support.

LISTENING TO JAZZ

Workshop/Seminar

These sessions are intended especially for those who enjoy listening to jazz and are curious to know more about how the music is put together and created.  What is written and what is improvised?  How does the composition guide the improvisation?  What is meant by "playing the changes"?  How does one count a particular composition?

The first session will focus on the blues, the second on common song forms used in "jazz standards," and the third on the innovative compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre.

FRANKLIN PARK
COALITION
Support the Franklin Park Coalition and the park you love!

skiingFPC relies on members, people like you, to make a difference in the park. A large membership gives us the power to protect and improve Franklin Park. With the economic downturn, our numbers have fallen, but it's just $5 (please give more if you can afford it) to become a member and make our collective voice stronger. Please donate and join today!

Your contribution will support the Playhouse in the Park, teen jobs working in the woodlands, and the park's trees. Last year volunteers planted more than 200 young trees in our efforts to restore and save Franklin Park's 200 acres of forest.

Thank you for supporting the park and the Coalition. Please join us this winter at park events. On behalf of the FPC staff and Board of Directors, have a safe and wonderful New Year!

Executive Director
snowy woods Winter Volunteer Day
Saturday, January 15th 10:00am-Noon

Beat the winter blues, get outside, and help care for Boston's historic forest - the 220 acres of woodlands in Franklin Park.  You'll be part of a tree liberation force clearing prickly catbrier vines that wrap around young trees and kill them. All ages welcome, there'll be plenty of hot chocolate. Wear layers and glove liners that can go under work gloves. Heavy cotton sweatshirts are best, nylon jackets may tear. Meet at Valley Gates Parking Lot, midway along the main park road.

sleddingSnow Festival!
Saturday, February 5th 1:00-4:00pm

Try out snowshoes, track animal prints in the snow with a naturalist, build snow people, go sledding, or play board games and warm up inside with hot chocolate. If you have cross country skis bring them for a tour of the park (1:30pm). All ages welcome. Bring a sled if you have one, we'll have some to share. Snow dependent - keep your fingers crossed! At the Franklin Park Golf Course.
If you love Franklin Park, want to see it continue to improve, and enjoy programs like the Playhouse in the Park, nature activities at the Fall Festival, or volunteer days - become a member today! 11.    Boston's MLK Celebration @ Fanueil Hall FREE: Guests include NIKKI GIOVANNI  (1/17--1pm)
==========================================================================

The Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events, the Museum of African American History and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) will present a free tribute concert in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 17, 2011, at 1:00pm at Faneuil Hall.  The program will feature a moving selection of classical music, spirituals and freedom songs performed by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras' Intensive Community Program, conducted by Marta Zurad.

Renowned poet, writer, activist, and educator Nikki Giovanni will deliver the keynote speech.  Nikki Giovanni is one of America's most well known poets.  In addition, a distinguished roster of leaders will read from some of Dr. King's most memorable writings and speeches.  This roster includes Rena Clark, Partner at GenNx360 Capital Partners, Phillip Clay the Chancellor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and The Honorable Roderick Ireland, Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

In keeping with the spirit of Dr. King's legacy, the City of Boston and Boston Cares are organizing a service event at the Curley School in Jamaica Plain on Monday, January 17, 2011.  Hundreds of volunteers will be given the opportunity to choose from various service projects. There will be two volunteer sessions; the first session will be from 10:00-12:30 p.m and the second will be from 1:00-3:30 p.m.  Registration will be available through the Boston Cares website, www.bostoncares.org and the City of Boston calendar section, www.cityofboston.gov/calendar.  This is a family friendly event.

Music, spoken word, history and a day of service create an exquisite memorial to one of the world's most beloved freedom fighters.

12.   Coalition to Dismantle the Cradle to Prison Pipeline Kickoff: 1/25--9am-12 noon, RSVP Now
==========================================================================

The Pipeline

The Cradle to Prison Pipeline is a national crisis that leaves a Black boy born in 2001 with a one in three chance of going to prison in his lifetime and a Latino boy a one in six risk of the same fate. The pipeline is fueled by racial disparities, pervasive poverty, trauma, inadequate health and mental health care, gaps in early childhood development, disparate educational opportunities, chronic abuse and neglect, and overburdened and ineffective juvenile justice systems.

The Coalition

The Coalition to Dismantle the Cradle to Prison Pipeline in Massachusetts is committed to replacing the Cradle to Prison Pipeline with a pipeline towards college and productive work. Click here to learn more about the Coalition.

RSVP

Please RSVP to let us know you are coming to the meeting.  Feel free to invite colleagues and other advocates.

 Happy New Year!
The City of Boston Public Works Department has begun collection of Christmas trees.  Trees will be collected for composting between Monday, January 3 and Friday, January 14.

Trees will be collected on your recycling day.  You can look up your recycling day here: http://www.cityofboston.gov/myneighborhood/

 During this time, trees will not be collected as trash, and should not be put out unless it is your recycling day.  Remove all ornaments, decorations, and stands, and place trees on the curb by 7 AM.  Do not put trees in plastic bags.
Correct Placement of Recycling Carts for Pickup in Winter

To ensure that recycling can be collected when snow is on the ground, please place carts next to or in front of snow banks.  The new large carts must be wheeled to the recycling truck instead of carried.  Do not place carts behind snow banks.
