11:00AM - THIS SATURDAY, FEB. 19, 2011
COMMUNITY REDISTRICTING MEETING:

REDISTRICTING AND THE

POOR

IN BOSTON

The redistricting process calls for redrawing the lines for every elected position in the country, including Boston.  For some people, this is not an important matter.

But for the poor its a matter of life and death. For poor people redistricting matters because:

• Unfair redistricting robs low-income communities of a unified political voice.

• Unfair redistricting reduces the capacity of poor people to organize against the

forces that oppress them.

• Unfair redistricting is a “divide and conquer” tactic that splits poor neighborhoods.

• When redistricting is done fairly, the poor get more representation at the state level, in city council and in the U.S. Congress.

• When redistricting is done fairly the voting rights of the poor are protected.

If You Care About The Poor,

You Should Care About Redistricting

We Need To Do It Again. We Need To.

Dear Community Leader & Activist:

To those who attended last week's redistricting meeting at the NEW GROVE HALL LIBRARY, we say thanks!

Please make every effort you can to attend the community's next meeting on this issue as we need your input and approval of the coalition's operating criteria, structure and action plan. Its important that we have this vision in place before we engage the general public which so needs our collective leadership. We also need to begin our outreach planning, which will be organized by Klare Allen.  We need you.

I can not overestimate how important it is that we have input from community leadership on how we engage the community around redistricting.  So please come out and bring a friend.

Attached, please see community education materials about redistricting and see whats at stake this year.

THE AGENDA WILL FOLLOW.

FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO AT LEAST 20 ACTIVISTS!

Blessing and Be well.
Kevin Peterson

WHERE:      GROVE HALL LIBRARY, UPPER SECOND FLOOR LEVEL

TIME:          11:00 AM TO 12:30 PM

WHY:           THE LAST TIME REDISTRICTING WAS DONE, OUR COMMUNITY WAS

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
I AM GRATEFUL!

"Democracy, in a word, is a social, that is to say, an ethical conception.  And upon its ethical significance is based its significance as governmental.  Democracy is a form of government only because it is a form of moral and spiritual association."     --John Dewey
