Weigh in!   1) BPS surveys -- school development   2) YTTF co-sponsoring gubernatorial forum   Dear Lorraine,   We have two important opportunities to weigh in at the local and state levels.  Please give your input promptly to make a difference!   1.   A BPS community survey to inform new-school planning and closures.  This would be a chance to advocate for struggling students & off-track youth to be better served through more alternative options and better support services in the regular high schools and middle schools.  For maximum impact, complete by Monday, Aug 16, mid-day, as the results will be publicized next week.  The district will consider later returns for planning purposes, though you should complete it by the end of next week.  Click here for survey.   2.  Sponsor gubernatorial forum. YTTF has an opportunity to join community groups from around the state in sponsoring a gubernatorial candidate forum, entitled "Increasing Opportunities, Reducing Fears & the 2010 Governor's Race," scheduled to take place in the beginning of October.  The forum is focused on youth violence prevention and intervention, which would include dropout prevention and recovery, among other youth issues.  We will be asked to provide $100 and send 10 students.  I'd like to do it (the PIC could provide the funds), but want to know if anyone has any objections.    Thanks! Kathy     News!    Race to the Top News:  Today, July 27, Massachusetts was named a finalist in the second round of the Race to the Top application process.  Read the press release  here.   Data systems grant.  The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) recently won a grant that will enable it to improve and expand its Early Warning Indicator system.  Here is information on this longitudinal data systems grant .   The ESE hopes to win another grant that will allow it to provide more support for local districts to better use the data for dropout prevention and recovery efforts.   Lower dropout rates in Boston and Massachusetts.  The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) and the Boston Public Schools (BPS) released the 08-09 dropout rates.  The state rate (2.9%) is the lowest rate in a decade and the BPS rate (7.3% by the ESE caclucuation and 6.4% by the BPS method--this Globe article summarizes the BPS rate improvement nicely) is the lowest in 2 decades, according to the BPS.    Numbers tell an even better story.  In our work, we have always tried to look at the numbers, not just the rates.  According to the ESE data, since 2006, when the state SIMS data system facilitated more accurate reporting, the BPS number has fallen steadily from its highest point 1,872 to 1,308--564 fewer students left school last year than in the 2005-2006 school year.  The state number fell by 1,374 (from 9,959 to 8,585) in the most recent year alone--and by 2,851 since 2007, the highest point since the SIMS conversion.  Read the BPS press release and the ESE press release for more.  Include articles on topics of interest to your readers, relevant news and events. EVICTON BLOCKADE ALERT

   Monday, August 16, 8:30 am,  

  48-50 Mansfield St., Everett 

 

By car:     Take Rt. 16 to intersection with Rt. 99. Take Rt. 99 (Broadway) north. 

    At City Hall right on Mansfield, 2 blocks to 48-50

By T:        Orange Line to Sullivan Station. 104 Bus up Broadway.

    Get off at City Hall. Walk down Mansfield. 

 

            Pierre and Prudhomme Dumerant and their families occupy two units at 48-50 Mansfield.  They were foreclosed as a result of inability to pay the inflated mortgage value of the housing bubble (created by Wall St.).  Like many homeowners, they can afford to pay a mortgage on the real current value. 

 

            The families were approved for a new mortgage with Boston Community Capital.  BCC offered $190,000 on July 28, 2010.  The Bank, GMAC, operating through Orlans Moran law firm, wanted $260,000.  BCC increased its offer.  GMAC lowered its demand.  In other words, negotiations.  But Orlans Moran sent a "48-hour notice" for eviction effective Monday morning at 9 am.  We will block this eviction. 

 

            BCC is considering a further increase in its offer.  GMAC should continue to give time for negotiations.  The families are willing (have always been willing) to pay rent in the mean time. 

 

            What makes this case even worse is that Mrs. Dumerant (76 years old) had surgery on Thursday and will probably be discharged on Monday – TO WHERE?  Also, this eviction will make 4 children homeless who are now in Everett schools.
