The 1960s were a time of unrest in our neighborhood, but also an exciting time of political and cultural change. We'll begin with the relatively well-known protests against the construction of I-95 along the Southwest Corridor. From there our attention will focus on mid-20th century revolutionary leaders Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X. After passing the former locations of the Black Panthers and SNCC, we'll end with an overview of the 1967 and 1968 riots in Grove Hall and the police staging grounds in Franklin Park. Mayor Thomas Menino launched the Dudley Vision Project, a multi-year, city-funded initia-tive to enhance the thriving retail district of Dudley Square. To collaborate with city staff associated with this effort, a Dudley Vision Advisory Task Force has been appointed.

 

The project will bring state of the art munici-pal facilities to the area —

·       A new Area B-2 Police Station

·       A new Dudley Square Municipal Building

        (aka “the Ferdinand Building”)

·       A new Transportation Action Plan

·       Renovations to the exterior of the Dudley Branch Library

 

This Community Meeting will provide an opportunity for community members to learn more and ask questions about the Dudley Vision Advisory Task Force’s plans for the neighborhood.

7.       HEADS-UP…NEED YOU TO ACT NOW: Urge Senators to Vote Against Destructive House Budget   (Time Sensitive)

Dear supporter of tax fairness and United for a Fair Economy, The Senate will vote this week on the disastrous House budget.  Please read the alert below from our friends at the Coalition on Human Needs (CHN) and email a letter to your two Senators asking them to oppose the House budget.  When you personalize your email, please add some or all of these points: We should be raising more revenue from the wealthy and corporations, not hurting vulnerable families. Restoring a strong estate tax would bring in $73 billion over 10 years, compared to the weak estate tax passed last year. Taxing capital gains and dividends at the same rate as income from work would bring in $88 billion per year. Eliminating the Bush Tax Cuts for wealthy households over the next 10 years would generate $690 billion and save $140 billion in interest on debt. Passing the Fairness in Taxation Act would generate $78 billion a year by adding higher tax brackets for incomes over $1 million. Closing overseas tax havens for global corporations like General Electric would raise $100 billion a year. And changing these tax laws would reduce income disparities too! The bad budgets that are expected on the Senate floor: The House-passed Budget Resolution:  Over 10 years, it would slash $4.3 trillion in needed services, about two-thirds of which help low-income people.  At the same time, it makes net tax cuts worth $4.2 trillion almost exclusively targeted to the top 5 percent, leaving relatively little for deficit reduction.  Starting in the second decade, the House budget would turn Medicare into a voucher, doubling the burden of payment for its beneficiaries.  Far from helping the economy, this plan would cause the loss of 2.2 million jobs over the next two years. Here's an example of winners and losers in the House Budget Resolution: Just one of the new tax cuts benefiting high-earners would give a $1.64 million tax cut to a household earning $8.5 million.  But the cuts in food stamps/SNAP wouldtake away $147 a month from a low-income family of four.  And a family with two children with a parent working full-time at the minimum wage would lose about $1,500 a year from a cut in the Child Tax Credit.  Just some of the reasons why you should send this letter to your Senators right now! Senator Patrick Toomey's budget proposal:  Senator Toomey (R-PA) has drafted a budget that cuts even more than the House plan (spending 3 percent less over 10 years).  The plan indicates that more than half this figure will come from programs that provide income security for low-income people.  This plan also reduces tax rates for the wealthiest and for corporations, with the stated goal of remaining revenue neutral (however, the "special tax breaks" that would be eliminated to pay for rate reductions are unspecified).  For more information about the Toomey budget plan, click here (pdf). 	City of Boston Census officers will be visiting residences in Dorchester and Mattapan through June 3.
	Dear Community Members:   Please be advised that the Boston Election Department's team of  annual listing (City Census) officers will be visiting each neighborhood throughout the next few months to update the annual listing of residents.    Every City and Town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is mandated by law to conduct an annual listing.  Information obtained during the listing process is forwarded to the Office of the Jury Commissioner for use in compiling jury pools, and is also used as an indicator of the population changes in the City.    The information gathered also helps to ensure the accuracy and the integrity of the voting list.    The Listing Officers will go door-to-door in neighborhoods, and are easily identified by their City-issued photo-IDs and bright orange vests.    They will confirm basic information for each address: name, occupation, and birth date of each occupant age 17 and older.  If there are new residents at the address, the Listing Officer will obtain the appropriate information, and will also drop off voter registration forms for those who may want to register to vote.       The Listing Officers will be in Ward 14 (Dorchester and Mattapan) starting May 25until June 3.  Additional e-mail notifications will be sent throughout the next few weeks/months as we enter another ward/neighborhood.  Please share this information with your community members, family, friends, co-workers, etc.    Thank you for your time, and please do not hesitate to contact the  Boston Election Department at 617-635-3767 should you have any further questions or concerns.   If you have not responded to the Annual Listing yet, please visit this website to update your information: http://www.cityofboston.gov/elections/annual_listing.asp.    Sincerely, Boston Election Department

10.     MBTA Key Bus Route Meetings for Bus Route 66                                                                        (6/6—6:00-8:00pm + 6/23—6:30-8:00Ppm)

 

Bus Route 66 Community Meetings   Dear MBTA Riders and Interested Parties, The MBTA has been working with the community to develop a series of improvements to Bus Route 66. Based on community feedback, the MBTA will be presenting progress design plans for implementation, including: the addition of customer amenities and bus stop consolidation, which will result in the changes to the location of some bus stops. Bus stops may be relocated and/or eliminated. We want your feedback on these proposed changes. Bus Route 66 operates between Harvard Square and Dudley Station via Union Square, Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, and Brigham Circle. It provides high frequency service to these areas in addition to serving important destinations such as Harvard University, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Reggie Lewis Center and several schools. It also provides connections to the Red, Green, Orange and Silver Lines as well as many other bus routes including Key Bus Routes 1, 15, 22, 23 28, 71, 73 and 77 and the following local and crosstown routes – 8, 14, 19, 41, 42, 44, 45, 47, 68, 69, 72, 74, 75, 78, 86, 96, 170 and 171. The following meetings will discuss potential improvements to Bus Route 66. Please join us to share your ideas. Each of you have huge networks and the Boston Branch NAACP is asking you to please post the information regarding our upcoming Discrimination Training on your FB pages or distribute via email.  Whether an urban professional, blue color worker, the chronically unemployed, a young person or a senior, a Democratic or Republican...folks have likely experienced some form of discrimination if you're black or brown in Boston.  However, we find ourselves questioning whether it's us or them.  We may struggle with making the case or with finding an attorney to represent us.  We often avoid the time, expense and energy required to challenge the person, the institution or the system--but what's the effect of that choice on long term change.  We have entitled our training "It is what it is.  Or is it?" and we're confident this will be a major step toward reawakening the much needed conversation on discrimination and race.  I would like to ensure there is not one empty seat in the Kroc Center, since this training is so important and rare.

 

The official marketing of this FREE training will begin Tuesday, May 23rd, but we have already begun to receive RSVPs from community residents, local attorneys, activists and academics.  We will not hear individual cases at this training, but will announce ongoing legal clinics where residents can work with attorneys on their specific complaints.  Space is limited to 250 people.

NAACP legal trainings at Kroc Center

On Wednesday, June 8, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Boston Branch NAACP will hosting a Racial Discrimination Training at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, located at 650 Dudley Street,Dorchester. The training is co-sponsored with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts' Young Professional's Network (YPN) and the Fair Housing Center of Greater Boston, and supported by the Attorney General's Civil Rights Division and the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD).
What is racial discrimination? How do you prove it? What are the roles of the various local, state and federal agencies and law enforcement entities? How do you respond if you've been a victim of discrimination? What is MCAD and how do you navigate the complaint submission process? What if you're represented by a union? These are just a few of the questions that we plan to address during this three-hour training. Following the training, the Boston Branch NAACP will work with the Fair Housing Center of Greater Boston, the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights and possibly a local law school to develop ongoing legal clinics where people can come for assistance with their specific cases. Two Summer Internships are available at the Federation for Children with Special Needs for 7 weeks in July and August 2011.  The Federation is proud to be a part of the Martin Luther King Summer Scholars initiative (formerly known as Boston Summer Scholars), sponsored by John Hancock Financial in response to Mayor Menino's call to action in support of Boston teens.

  

This year, the MLK Summer Scholars program is joined by Boston University and Partners HealthCare in paying tribute to the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. here in Boston. Dr. King lived in Boston while completing his doctorate at Boston University from 1951-1955. The renaming of the Summer Scholars program underscores King's message of social change through hard work.

 

Employment for this opportunity will be at The Federation for Children with Special Needs, which is a parent advocacy organization that serves parents of children at risk and those with special health and education needs through the provision of information, resources, presentations and phone calls from those seeking support.  Services are routinely provided in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese and other languages as needed.  The Federation is conveniently located at Renaissance Park, immediately adjacent to the Ruggles “T” Stop.

 

The Federation is seeking two MLK Summer Scholars; one with interest and skills in Agency Administration and one in Information Technology.  Interns will work approximately 17.5 hours per week including a weekly Friday morning training seminar.

 

Student interns must meet the following criteria:

·         At least 15 years old

·         Resident of Boston

·         In high school or a recent (2011) high school graduate

 

Along with gaining valuable workplace experience, students will attend a series of life skills workshops, focused on building their own legacies, each Friday morning at Boston University's Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Ave. Boston, MA.

 

MLK Summer Scholars is an outgrowth of The Boston Globe Foundation's Opportunity for Unity initiative and John Hancock's Summer of Opportunity program.
