Roxbury Residents, Stakeholders, and Friends of Roxbury:
The new year begins with a promise to get a lot accomplished. The Whittier Street Health Center project is underway, the Ruggles Place and Bartlett Yard teams are getting ready to submit their Article 80 Project Notification Form, and the RFP for 9 & 10 is ready to be issued in February. The Roxbury Strategic Master Plan Oversight Committee members will need the support of residents, stakeholders, and friends of Roxbury to help them implement the goals of the Roxbury Strategic Master Plan. They will need your encouragement, your attendance, and your input in order to succeed with the work that lies ahead.
The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 10, at 6:00 PM, at the Dudley Branch Library.
For your convenience, I have attached a copy of the meeting calendar for the year 2011. The calendar is also available on the BRA Website.
Wishing you all the best for 2011,

LISTENING TO JAZZ
Workshop/Seminar
These sessions are intended especially for those who enjoy listening to jazz and are curious to know more about how the music is put together and created. What is written and what is improvised? How does the composition guide the improvisation? What is meant by "playing the changes"? How does one count a particular composition?
The first session will focus on the blues, the second on common song forms used in "jazz standards," and the third on the innovative compositions of Makanda Ken McIntyre.
Seminar leaders: Bill Lowe, John Kordalewski

The Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events, the Museum of African American History and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) will present a free tribute concert in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 17, 2011, at 1:00pm at Faneuil Hall. The program will feature a moving selection of classical music, spirituals and freedom songs performed by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras' Intensive Community Program, conducted by Marta Zurad.
Renowned poet, writer, activist, and educator Nikki Giovanni will deliver the keynote speech. Nikki Giovanni is one of America's most well known poets. In addition, a distinguished roster of leaders will read from some of Dr. King's most memorable writings and speeches. This roster includes Rena Clark, Partner at GenNx360 Capital Partners, Phillip Clay the Chancellor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and The Honorable Roderick Ireland, Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
In keeping with the spirit of Dr. King's legacy, the City of Boston and Boston Cares are organizing a service event at the Curley School in Jamaica Plain on Monday, January 17, 2011. Hundreds of volunteers will be given the opportunity to choose from various service projects. There will be two volunteer sessions; the first session will be from 10:00-12:30 p.m and the second will be from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Registration will be available through the Boston Cares website, www.bostoncares.org and the City of Boston calendar section, www.cityofboston.gov/calendar. This is a family friendly event.
Music, spoken word, history and a day of service create an exquisite memorial to one of the world's most beloved freedom fighters.
